Not a democracy

Apropos of a recent post, it’s not democracy that Afghans dislike:

What is objected to is the lack of democracy in the voting process in Afghanistan; the vote-rigging, the corruption, and the skullduggery.

Perhaps its not a good idea to ask whether or not Afghans like democracy when they don’t have it. Its even worse to call it a democracy when it clearly is not one.

  • what is democracy? it’s the matter of ‘what’s the right thing to do?: Justice (as Plato said early; it reminds me of the most complex topics such ethics, human nature, etc).so it’s hard to answer. even though we find out temporary answers, institutionalizing them into political reality and achieving legitimacy and stability seems more painful, sometimes even seems impossible… ! but we’re still looking for justice, why? i don’t know. but one clear thing is that politics needs something more than rationality.

  • Tough questions. What is justice? Politics needs something more than rationality? Such as what? I have a preference for social democracy over a laissez-faire one, but this is a normative stance. I can derive it by saying I think society should judge itself by how it treats the worst off, but others may disagree. One person’s justice maybe another’s predation.
