Imara

An avowed nerd, political junkie and perpetual student of international affairs, I’m a relative newcomer to the District of Columbia and Georgetown University. Hailing from distant and exotic New Jersey I worked in technology for about a decade before deciding on the career change that sent me back to University in study of the softer side of science. In New Jersey I first studied social science at Essex County College where I juggled sociology and psychology before moving on to Rutgers University to take up political science. Though I have been civically active for many years, my professional shift from technology to politics came after years of lucrative if unfulfiling work as a result of my family’s history in activism and an idealistic desire to leave the world a better place than I found it.

Given my history in web technologies these recent years have been an amazing time to study world politics and the impact these new forms of media have had on our political systems. It’s been nice to see how regularly my experience in technology has proven useful in my new field, with one such example obviously being the opportunity to work with the Democracy & Society team.

Founded in 2004, Democracy and Society is a biannual print journal published by the Center for Democracy and Civil Society at Georgetown University. The D&S Blog provides web-only content, including special reports and investigative series, on issues relating to democracy and development.
