Liza

I have worked in the field of democracy education and civil society development for nearly ten years. I have advocated at the state and federal level on behalf of civic education in the United States and abroad, and I have administered democracy and human rights education programs funded by USAID, the Middle East Partnership Initiative, the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor at the US Department of State, and the US Department of Education. I have organized and participated in civic education programs around the world, including the annual World Congresses on Civic Education (2005 – 2010) and the Congressional Conferences on Civic Education (2003 – 2006), as well as numerous teacher professional development trainings, student showcases, and camps. In my professional capacity, I have traveled to nearly twenty countries in the regions of East Asia, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and North Africa, and Sub-Saharan Africa.

I am interested in how formal and non-formal education can contribute to more peaceful, participatory, and just societies, particularly in post-conflict environments and during democratic transitions. I received a BA in History with a minor in Music Performance (cello) from George Washington University and I am currently finishing my MA in the Democracy and Governance program at Georgetown University.

Founded in 2004, Democracy and Society is a biannual print journal published by the Center for Democracy and Civil Society at Georgetown University. The D&S Blog provides web-only content, including special reports and investigative series, on issues relating to democracy and development.
